About this calculator
Your Birthstar (Janma Nakshatra) is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at birth. There are 27 Nakshatras, each 13°20' wide, and each is divided into four padas (quarters).
Vedic background
Nakshatras predate the 12-rashi zodiac and are the oldest layer of Vedic time-keeping. Each Nakshatra is tied to a deity and has its own mythic story — Rohini's beauty, Jyeshtha's eldest-sibling pride, Ashwini's healing speed, and so on. Classical Prashna and Muhurta texts lean heavily on the daily Nakshatra for auspicious timing, more than the tithi or yoga.
