Shani Sade Sati is the 7.5-year period when Saturn transits the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from one's natal moon. Each phase lasts ~2.5 years. It is traditionally considered a period of hard lessons, slow progress, and spiritual testing — though not uniformly bad.

Saturn takes ~29.5 years to complete one orbit of the zodiac, so Sade Sati occurs roughly once every 30 years. Most people experience 2–3 Sade Sati periods in their lifetime.

Opinions vary. The first phase (Saturn in 12th from moon) is often associated with financial drain and introspection. The second (1st from moon) with identity challenges and health. The third (2nd from moon) with family and speech. Most classical texts consider the second phase the hardest.
